Over the past 5 years painting became a prominent aspect of Debra's sculptures. Then sculpture became a format on which to paint. Gradually, her interest in two-dimensional illusion became a primary focus with a renewed fascination with the power of illusion. In the most recent work, shapes are grouped to form patterns that are painted onto a wooden surface. Using software tools like FormZ (modeling program) and photoshop, patterns are created that can be distorted and modified in endless ways. These patterns are the templates for the paintings. It is the painting process with layer upon layer of glazes that infuses these images with life.
The main constant in all the work, past and present, is achieving a sense of depth and movement using patterns that are layered and/or built. The goal is to create a feeling of wonder through slow and subtle changes in groupings of marks, be they rectangles or more organic shapes.
